Unit Two
Shifts and Changes
Though the 20th Century boasted a “high” mariology, movements were already
happening which would pose threat to a mariology that was in danger of becoming excessive and superstitious. Emerging theological insights were
already bringing pressure to bear theological enquiry, and there was a growing realization of the need to utilize the best of the social sciences in considering the
Church’s response to the modern world. This would culminate in the aggiornomento of John XXIII and lead to increasing debate about Mary’s role.

Unit Three The Impact of emergent theologies on Mariology
There is little doubt that the Second Vatican Council - and its discussion of the
role of Mary within the Church and in popular piety was a catalyst for change. Debate raged about whether the Council should have a separate document on
Mary - or if a new dogma of Mary’s role should be announced. This unit explores the dimension of Marian renewal inherent in Vatican II, its immediate impact, the
role of Paul VI in this renewal and the results of the debates and pronouncements on Mary.
This unit explores the impact emergent theology had on Mariology. Liberation
Theology and Feminist Theology. It provides readings on current trends in Mariolocial thought.
